In my calendar, today is the First Day of Summer. You can tell because it's Opening Day. This works much beter with people who talk about hope and beginning anew - that is the stuff of spring, and spring training. Now it is April, and we can start eliminating the Orioles, Nationals, Devil Rays, Royals, Rockies, and Pirates from playoff contention.
Luckily for me living in DC, we are opening against the Braves, which means I get the game on TBS. As I sit here watching the first pitch (fastball, outside corner, strike 1!) of the Phillies' season, here are a few Phillies predictions to put me on the record for 2007.
1. Cole Hamels will not win 15 games. Brett Myers will. Hamels is still a year away, because he will walk too many.
2. Pat Burrell will drive in 100 runs.
3. Ryan Howard will hit 50 home runs.
4. If he isn't your hero yet, Chase Utley will be your hero by the end of the year.
5. I will not have goosebumps. It's going to be a fun year anyway.

First Day of Summer

HAHAHA...What a stupid marketing campaign.
Please someone promise me that what we saw yesterday was simply a mirage and not indicative of the season.
1. Howard should not hit in front of Utley. Utley can score from second on a Howard single, but Howard cannot score from second on an Utley single. Howard also can't go first to third after being walked and an Utley single. This kills Utley's speed. Howard hits 4, no more nonsense about protection.
2. Pull Myers after 7. It's the first game of the season. Regardless of whether or not we won the game, what does that do to the confidence of the bullpen when you don't trust them on opening day. In truth, the bullpen hasn't blown any games yet. Let's at least manage normally and deal with that gap when we need to cross it.
3. STOP striking out. We essentially gave the Braves fielders one free pass through the lineup with Ks. Come on. 2nd and 3rd no outs...K, K, ground out...from our 2, 3, 4 hitters...completely inexcusable.
